SWISS WORDS - German Word of the Day

This week was all about Halloween and the girls had a party over the weekend at our house crafting Halloween decorations, they had a dress up and mini party at school - but alas the actual trick or treating on the night was as Zara said "an epic fail". It seems our road is still very much Swiss, and we only had one family come and visit our decorated door and the girls I kid you not got literally one sweet when they went round the neighbourhood. Maybe next year we will have more luck!

SWISS WORDS - German Word of the Week

This week Zara and Bailey had the Annual Drum Workshop at school. Every year an experienced instructor comes and teaches the kids how to play an AFrican Drum. It is pretty cool, and we were able to come and listen to a mini performnace in the faternoon as part of Mom's Coffee.

SWISS WORDS - Map

GERMAN WORD OF THE WEEK
At the moment we have a bit of a travel theme going on in our house. In our living room, you will spot all diferent sizes and types of globes (some from here, some from SA, some I am not entirley sure where from).
(The map behind is a huge canvas you can buy from IKEA)
Then to expand on the theme, the girls have been asking me ever since they spotted one in their friend's room for a Scrath Map. We actually used to have the Scratch Maps for sale at In Good Company, and luckily for me, I was able to pick up the mini versions from a shop in Zug. (Have you visited the corner shop in the Nevstaad Passage (next to COOP) - they have some great quirky gifts!).
And then lastly, on the same day I found the perfect addition to the new bedroom wall gallery I am planning for our main bedroom. This 3D relief map of Switzerland I found at Balmer - already framed for just over 100chf!

SWISS WORDS - German Word of the Week

GERMAN WORD OF THE WEEK
For my Oktoberfest photoshoot table, I laid out some hessian table runners and then hunted as far as possible for anything that was blue. Unfortunately, I didn't have the exact blue, so instead I combined all different blues, that way the overall look was okay, and not one blue item would look out of place.
For the napkins, I used an idea I found on a German webiste: giant pretzels for napkin rings.
For the place cards, I recreated the look of the Karanval Lebekuchen Hertz (Carnival Gingerbread Hearts) you often see at German Autumn Fairs. Using my chalkboard pen I dotted around the edge of heart chalkboard tags and wrote the name inside. These I then tied around the neck of bottles of beer.
More details tomorrow on the centrepieces and that awesome hat idea I spotted on Debbie's Cookkstudio.co.za website.

One of the first words I made sure that I learnt when I first visited Switzerland in 2004 was "horse". You may think this is an odd word for someone who is working in the City and has always lived in a city to prioritise. But this was to make a 100% sure that when I read any menu or went shopping at any grocery store or butcher I would not make the mistake of ordering or buying horsemeat.
It is a real thing here, and readily available at both Migros and COOP and I even spotted it the other day on the Mexican Restaurant's menu. It's not my thing at all, but I guess at least here they are forced to detail on every menu and every package what meat it is - unlike the UK "Beef" lasagne drama of 2013.

In celebration of the first time that I made homemade hamburgers, I decided to immortalise this event with a blog post. There is not much of a recipe to share so I decided it best to share this news as part of a new German Word of the Day. But as German for Hamburger is Hamburger, I took it a step further to share that Hackfleisch = Mincemeat.
(And just in case you want my mini recipe: mincemeat + salt + pepper + garlic powder + cayenne pepper + oregano + chopped onion). You can also add bread cumbs but I gave these a miss so they are "carb-free" or rather I was too lazy to make bread crumbs.

I was bragging the other day to Liam about the fact that I finally accomplished one of my #lifegoals which was a clean and organised kitchen cupboard. He gave me a little pat on the head and then was reminded about the famous Swiss German word for a "Kitchen cupboard".
The word Chuchichäschtli means kitchen cupboard but with its three hard ‘ch’ sounds, this word is almost impossible for foreigners – including High German speakers - to get their mouth around. So I have been trying hard to pronounce it and hopefully win lots of respect from my German teacher who is Swiss. But I don't know what is going to be harder: me getting the pronounciation right or me trying to discreetly make the word come up in our conversation.

Today at 8:34 were heard two loud bangs and the earth shook here in Zug. After a bit of googling and google-translating I was able to learn that these two "überschall-knalle" (loud bangs) were in fact two sound booms that the Swiss Air Force jets make when they fly above the speed of sound. They were accompanying a commercial airline flight out of Swiss air space after a false bomb alert was made in the United States. Possibly a word I don't want to hear too often?

The girls summer concert for the year was The Jungle Book or rather Das Dschungel Buch. I kid you not that is how it is spelt. Proving once again that there ijust isn't any hope for me to learn German!
The show itself was great and I was even inspired to bring a bit of the jungle home with us for our dinner table. Here are a few snapshots...

For our word of the week, it is one that is likely going to be very visible and vocal over the next few weeks: what with the Euro 2016 Football championship already underway and the Olympics to follow soon after.
“Hopp Schwiiz“ is the slogan used to support Swiss athletes and national teams on sport events and can be translate to mean Go Switezrland, or Come On Switzerland!

SWISS WORDS - Wanderweg

What is a "wanderweg"? This directly translated is a hiking trail. And all over Switzerland these little yellow signs will direct you to destinations along walking trails and indicate how long it will take you to get there.
To be honest, I have only walked very few and definitely all under an hour, but you can imagine my joy when I spotted this souvenoir in Migros the other day - now this is one "wanderweg" that I do daily numerous times!

SWISS WORDS - Znüni und Zvieri

SWISS WORD OF THE WEEK
If you are Swiss or your kids go to Swiss local school then you will know exactly what these two Swiss German words mean. Basically, Znüni is the fifteen minute or so break taken in the morning at around nine o'clock, it's also the food (sandwich or fruit most of the times) eaten during that break. "nuni" is nine. Zvieri is the same thing in the afternoon "vieri" is "four" - so this break is usually then taken at four o'clock in the afternoon.
This break is taken by young and old, so often you will see the coffee shops packed full with "builders" having their coffee break, chatting to co workers or reading the newspaper. These breaks are common across all of Switzerland, but these terms are used only in the Swiss German Region.
The favourite thing I like about this snack time is the poster that has been issued by the government detailing healthy snack tips!
